DYNAMITE DANNY WEEK’S BEST ANEW
Player of the Week December 11 to 17 PRE-season dedication is bearing wondrous fruits for Danny Seigle and his team, San Miguel Beer. With the man known as the “Dynamite” coming up with timely explosions, the Beermen are on a six-game winning streak which could land them an automatic semifinal slot in the Talk ‘N Text PBA Philippine Cup, its classification phase already on its final homestretch. A 97-85 win over Welcoat followed by a 114-102 demolition of Talk ‘N Text showcased SMB’s charge led by Seigle in the week that was, jacking its win-loss record to 12-5 and putting it right behind leader Barangay Ginebra (12-4) in the leaderboard. The top two teams after the grueling 18-game qualification round advance outright to the semis and, unless the unlikely happened, the Beermen appear right on a track for a well-deserved rest. Seigle is foremost among SMB’s crew of blue-collar workers pointing the way, making him the hands-down choice as the PBA Press Corps’ Accel-Talk ‘N Text Player of the Week for the period December 11-17. The previous Philippine Cup’s Best Player of the Conference averaged 27.0 points on a 51% shooting from the field and a perfect 100% from the 15-foot-line (16 for 16), 4.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.0 steal in the Beermen’s twin wins, edging out for the weekly recognition Barangay Ginebra’s Sunday Salvacion and Purefoods’ Peter June Simon, who had career-high games this past week. It was the second such honor bestowed on the 30-year-old forward, having been cited by the pro league scribes as their Co-Players of the Week with Air21’s Gary David for the October 16-22 span. Coach Chot Reyes said it was Seigle’s devotion to a pre-season regime that is enabling the 6-foot-7 player to come up with his huge numbers. “Before the season started, we wanted him to be in the best shape he could possibly be,” related Reyes, knowing fully well the 1999 Rookie of the Year has been wracked by injuries in the course of the past few seasons. “He readily applied himself to the task with a very single-minded determination, he worked hard and his game today only reflects his commitment to his conditioning,” Reyes added. Seigle’s numbers are concrete testament, coming up with 28 points on an 8-of-12 field goal shooting, three rebounds and an assist against Welcoat last Wednesday. He had 19 of his points in the first half, most coming when SMB needed a rallying point to bounce back from a slow start. Seigle was as lethal against the Phone Pals, although it didn’t initially show when he was limited to just two points in the first quarter. No matter how the likes of Harvey Carey, Don Allado and Anthony Washington tried, Seigle still eventually wound up with 26 points on a 10-of-22 field shooting and 5-of-5 from the line. He also had six rebounds, three assists, two steals and one block in 36 minutes of action. There seems to be no stopping Dynamite from coming up with his explosions night in and night out for San Miguel Beer.
